Is Your Startup Invisible to AI Search? 7 Signs You Need an AEO Audit

Most startups find out they’re invisible in AI search the hard way — a prospect mentions they “couldn’t find much” when they asked ChatGPT about you, or a competitor keeps coming up instead. Before that happens again, it’s worth checking for the warning signs. Here are seven signals that it’s time for an Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) audit.
1. You rank fine on Google, but AI tools have never heard of you
Traditional SEO and AI visibility are not the same system. If your site ranks reasonably well in classic search but ChatGPT or Perplexity draw a blank when asked about your category, your content isn’t structured in a way AI engines can retrieve and cite.
2. Competitors show up in AI answers and you don’t
Ask an AI assistant to name tools in your category. If a competitor consistently appears and you don’t, they’ve likely earned citations you haven’t — through comparison content, review site presence, or community mentions you’re missing.
3. Your site blocks AI crawlers without you realizing it
A single line in robots.txt can quietly exclude GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot from your entire site. Many teams inherit this setting from a template and never check it — meaning no AI engine can read your content at all, no matter how good it is.
4. Your content buries the answer under paragraphs of setup
AI engines extract concise, direct answers — not narrative build-up. If every page opens with three paragraphs of context before getting to the point, there’s nothing clean for a model to lift and cite.
5. You have no presence on Reddit, G2, or review platforms
AI engines lean heavily on third-party validation. Perplexity in particular cites Reddit threads constantly, and G2 or Capterra listings show up across ChatGPT comparison answers. If you have zero footprint on these platforms, you’re missing one of the biggest citation sources available.
6. Your pages are missing structured data entirely
Without Organization, Product, or FAQPage schema, AI crawlers have to guess at what your business actually does. Structured data removes the guesswork and gives models a clean, trustworthy source to cite.
7. You don’t actually know where you stand
This is the most common sign of all. Most founders have never systematically tested how their startup appears across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews for the prompts that actually matter to their buyers. If you can’t answer that with data, it’s time for an audit.
What an AEO Audit Actually Checks
A proper audit tests real buyer prompts across major AI engines, reviews your technical crawlability and schema, and maps where your citations are (or aren’t) coming from — then turns that into a prioritized list of fixes instead of a vague “improve your content” recommendation.
