What Is Answer Engine Optimization? A Beginner's Guide for Startups
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content and online presence so that AI-powered "answer engines," such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and voice assistants, select your company as a source when someone asks a relevant question.
It's a response to a real shift in behavior. People increasingly type a question into ChatGPT or Perplexity instead of typing keywords into Google and clicking through ten links. If your company doesn't show up in that answer, you don't just lose a click; instead, you lose the chance to be considered at all, because the buyer may never see a traditional search results page.
Why AEO exists as its own discipline
Traditional SEO was built around a simple mechanic: rank high, get clicked, convert on your site. Answer engines break that mechanic. When ChatGPT answers a question directly, there's no click involved at all. Your brand either gets named in the answer or it doesn't. That changes what "ranking" even means, and it changes what kind of content earns a citation.
AI models don't crawl and rank pages the way Google's classic algorithm does. They rely on a mix of:
Retrieval-augmented search — pulling in live web results (this is how Perplexity and ChatGPT's browsing mode work)
Training data patterns — general knowledge baked in from what the model learned during training
Third-party validation — mentions on Reddit, G2, Capterra, YouTube, and other sites the model treats as trustworthy, independent signal
That third point is the one most companies miss. AEO isn't just about your website. It's about your presence across the wider web that AI models actually pull from.
What AEO looks like in practice
For a startup, AEO work generally breaks into three buckets:
1. Technical foundations Schema markup (Organization, Product, FAQ, AboutPage) that tells machines explicitly who you are and what you do. An llms.txt file that signals how AI crawlers should treat your content. Clean, consistent entity information, the same company description, category, and facts, wherever your business appears online.
2. Content structured for extraction AI models favor content that answers a question directly and early, not content that buries the answer under three paragraphs of preamble. Practically, that means FAQ sections, comparison pages, glossary definitions, and clear H2s that mirror the way people actually phrase questions.
3. Third-party proof This is the piece most SEO-only strategies skip entirely. LLMs weight independent, non-branded sources heavily (a Reddit thread, a G2 review, a YouTube walkthrough, a Quora answer). A company with a beautifully optimized website but zero organic mentions elsewhere is still largely invisible to AI search.
How to know if you need it
A fast gut check: open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask the exact questions your prospects would ask — "best [your category] for [your ICP]," "[your product] vs [competitor]," "how do I solve [the problem you solve]." If your company doesn't come up, or comes up inaccurately, that's your answer.
Getting started
You don't need to do everything at once. The typical starting sequence is: run a baseline check of how you currently show up across a set of real prompts, fix the technical gaps that are easiest to close (schema, entity consistency), and then build a content and third-party visibility plan around the gaps that remain. A structured audit — tracking a set of prompts across ChatGPT and Perplexity, benchmarked against competitors — is usually the fastest way to see exactly where you stand before spending on content.
FAQ
Is AEO different from SEO? Yes, though they share a foundation. SEO optimizes for ranking in traditional search results; AEO optimizes for being selected as the direct answer inside AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and similar tools.
How long does AEO take to show results? Similar to SEO, AEO is a compounding effort rather than an instant fix. Technical changes like schema markup can show up in weeks; earning consistent AI citations through content and third-party mentions typically takes a few months of sustained work.
Do small companies actually need AEO, or just enterprises? Smaller companies arguably need it more. AI answer engines often cite a broader, less brand-dominated set of sources than classic Google rankings do, which is an opening for smaller, well-structured companies to get cited ahead of larger, less optimized competitors.
