Search Console Now Shows If AI Cites You. Here's How to Read It

Google Search Console added a Generative AI performance report that shows which pages of a site get cited inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by impressions, page, country, and device. It's the first time Google has published direct data on AI citation frequency, rather than leaving site owners to infer AI visibility from drops in organic traffic. The rollout started for a subset of UK site owners on June 3, 2026, under a mandate from the UK Competition and Markets Authority, and expanded to more sites globally in the weeks after.
What does the Generative AI performance report show?
The report covers five dimensions: impressions (how often a site's URLs appeared in AI features), pages (which specific URLs were cited), countries, devices, and dates, with granularity down to the hour. It doesn't yet include clicks, click-through rate, or the queries that triggered a citation. Google has said it plans to add more metrics based on site owner feedback, but for now the report answers one question: which pages is AI pulling from, and how often.
Why does this matter without click data?
AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the practice of structuring content so AI systems cite it directly in their answers rather than only ranking it in a list of links. Before this report, the only way to gauge AEO performance was indirect: comparing organic traffic trends against AI adoption curves, or manually prompting ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and checking which pages came up. Neither method ties a citation to a specific page with any precision. This report closes that gap for Google's own AI surfaces, giving a page-level citation count that didn't exist a month ago.
What does the 5WPR citation index reveal about engine-specific sources?
A separate study released this month, the 5WPR AI Platform Citation Source Index 2026, synthesized more than 680 million citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews, drawing on six of the largest citation studies published between August 2024 and April 2026. The index found that only 11% of domains get cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity, meaning each engine pulls from a largely distinct set of sources. Reddit was the single most-cited source across every engine tested, appearing in roughly 40% of citations. The practical implication: a page optimized for citation in Google's AI Overviews isn't automatically positioned to be cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity. Each engine needs to be checked on its own.
How do you read your own AI performance report?
Open Search Console, go to the Search Results report, and filter by search type "AI Overview," or check the Generative AI performance view where it's available. Sort by page to see which URLs are accumulating impressions inside AI features, then compare that list against your highest-traffic organic pages. In most accounts these aren't the same set: a page can rank well in traditional search while never getting picked up in an AI Overview, and a page with modest traditional traffic can get cited repeatedly if it answers a specific question clearly and concisely.
What does the Yelp-OpenAI deal mean for local businesses?
OpenAI signed a licensing deal with Yelp that feeds 330 million user reviews and more than 8 million business listings into ChatGPT's local answers. When a user asks ChatGPT for a local service recommendation, the response can now surface Yelp ratings, photos, and business details directly, with Yelp's branding attached. For any business with an existing Yelp profile, this changes what ChatGPT already knows and can cite about it, with no action required. For businesses without a Yelp presence, or with thin or outdated listings, it's a new blind spot worth closing.
Three checks to run in Search Console this week
First, open the Generative AI performance report and note which pages have nonzero impressions; that's your baseline. Second, cross-reference that list against your top 10 organic-traffic pages to see where the two diverge. Third, pick three high-value pages showing zero AI impressions and check whether they open with a direct, self-contained answer to the question they target, since that structure is what AI engines extract most reliably.
FAQ
Does the Generative AI performance report include click data? Not yet. As of August 2026 the report covers impressions, cited pages, countries, and devices only. Google has said it plans to add more metrics, including clicks, based on feedback from site owners.
Is the report available to every Search Console user? Access expanded in stages starting June 2026, first to UK-based site owners under a Digital Markets Act mandate, then to more sites globally. Availability varies by property; check the Search Results report or the Generative AI performance view.
What's the difference between SEO and AEO? SEO ranks a page in a list of search results a user has to click through. AEO structures content so an AI system can extract it directly into a generated answer, often without the user visiting the source page at all.
Does being cited in Google's AI Overviews mean I'll also get cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity? No. A study covering 680 million citations found only 11% domain overlap between ChatGPT and Perplexity sources, and each engine has documented preferences for different content types and sources.
Can I block my content from appearing in AI Overviews? Google is testing a toggle inside Search Console to exclude content from AI Mode and AI Overviews, separate from standard robots.txt or noindex directives.
